Persephone (goddess of the underworld) was kidnapped by Hades and forcibly held in the underworld- there she grew to love him. Her mother, Demeter (goddess of the harvest), refused to allow anything to grow while she was missing. Once her release was won by Zeus (her father) and her mother, Hades gave Persephone four Pomegranate seeds to eat ensuring that she would return every year for four months.
